I started this series of works at the time I received a Cintas Fellowship. I became interested in creating works that reflected my ethnic origins and experience. I traveled to Miami, the place where I knew I was sure to find images suited to the subject matter I wanted to develop. I found Gomez Park, which at the time was yet to be officially named and popularly referred to as “el parque de los viejos,” or the “The Park for Old Men”. As soon as I saw them, I knew instantly that the “ancianos” had much to tell me, without the need to speak. I saw in them intangible qualities of resilience, strength, and even stubbornness. I admired them in their simple glory playing dominos. But I also saw a disconnection. It was as if they were not whole. They, and by extension we, are separated from our source, like islands in a sea of quietly desperate white space.
